Title: Where to store a whisker pole

To those with whisker poles:  Where do you store them?

I have mounts on my stantions.  But right now it is in the cabin on one of the quarter berths ( Cp-19) as I have been too lazy to use it this season.

This is first season with a roller furling jib, and happy not to climb out if the cockpit...

My 23 has shelves above the settee backrest/cabinets.  I stick mine on the port side and slide it back to the top of the bulkhead between the main cabin and the cockpit locker.  It jams in there tight and doesn't roll around.  I was going to put some clips to hold it but this worked well enough that I haven't done that.

I'd like to get a whisker pole. What is the preferred size for the 23?

I have a Forespar adj 6'-12' with spike on one end.  It is considered slightly undersized for a 23, however I've used it for about five years without incident.  I use it with a 130.  It was a little over a hundred bucks.  Next step up (tube diam)gets you to about $400 as I recall.

Thanks for the input.  Finbar; what kind of mounts do you have on your stanchions?  The only ones that I have seen were $100.00 for two of them.  They would be way down on my $100.00 boat needs list.  Of course everything for a boat is either $100.00 or $1,000.00!  As for length of the whisker pole, what I've read is it should be 75% - 100% the length of the headsail foot.

My pole has a latch on both ends. I use mast mounted pad eyes to secure to the front of the mast. I have a trip line run to the outboard end to make it convenient to release from the sail clue and from the upper mount on the mast which is too high for me to reach.

If you prefer the style with the spike on one end then you can just insert that into the upper mount and the latch at the bottom. One plastic eye comes with the pole and I purchased a second stainless steel for the lower mount, which is the eye I use when the pole is in use.

The reason I prefer the latch on both ends is that the spike can fall out of the clew pretty easily. You would obviously be running downwind and if the end of the pole goes in the water, which may likely happen as your boat rolls, then it may well be destroy the pole. They do bend pretty easily.

If your clew cringle is too fat to fit in the latch, you can tie a short piece line through it and secure your latch to that.

I use the same pole as Brack does...have had no complaints from the pole or the boat. I works fine and although seeming to be a bit undersized, it's never complained.
Me being a bit on the cheap side, I've tied the pole to two stanchions. I took some line, made a loop using a bowline and the pole slides into each loop and is tied against the stanchions with the remainder of the line. Of course, there is a small piece of pipe insulation zip tied to each stanchion because egads, man! Who would want that pole banging around making all that noise!!

Belly,

The stantions mounts were put on by previous owner.  Pole is pretty "beefy".  I will take pic tomorrow.
They are some type of rubber.

Regards,
Brian

Thanks Brian.  Pics would be great.  Tying it to the stanchions adding pipe insulation sounds good too.

Hey guys,
I simply clip one end of the whisker pole quick release to a stantion base. It stays there year round only clipped on one end and laying on the deck on the starboard side.
That's it.
