Title: Self Introduction
Post by: Pat Collins on July 26, 2018, 10:37:51 PM
Thanks for the welcome to the group.  I have been stalking here for awhile and have acquired loads of info on the ComPac 16.  For the past 10 years , my part-time hobby has been finding very inexpensive sailboats on Craigslist, Ebay, etc., and bringing them back to life on the cheap.  The ones that are too far gone, I strip for parts to use on the ones that need them.  I have restored and sold a 16 ft. Sunbird that I taught myself how to sail on.  Then a Ghost 13, a Sweet 16, and two Catalina 22's.  The largest initial outlay for any of these was $500.

About a year ago I bought a derelict, bare bones, 1984 ComPac 16 and have been sailing and fixing her up, a little at a time.  I also currently have a Catalina 22 that I restored and have sailed for about 3 years on beautiful, but small, Lake Murray, OK.

Since getting the '16' I have only had the Catalina out once.  The '16' is much easier and faster to rig and launch.  The past two weeks we have had 100 plus degree weather.  Too hot to sail, so I have been working on a few more fix-up projects on the boat in the mornings before the heat hits.  The boat had 35 years of chalk build up, a few gouges in the gel coat, and needed new non-skid.  So I decided to break out the paint.  If I can figure out how, I will post a couple of photos of before and after paint.

Thanks.  I am a 6' 4" old man and knew after the first sail that I needed a higher backrest.  These rails were pulled off of an old deckboat that I salvaged.  A few bends in the right places and they bolted right on.  I put some cheap pipe insulation over them and then covered with some velcro"d sunbrella.  Very comfortable and my Grandkids can now hold on.
