Title: Companionway Step
Post by: HJ51 on June 22, 2018, 12:02:23 PM
My bottom step has four holes which are obviously for whatever fasteners are supposed to hold the step in place.  They are missing and I'm trying to figure out what was used so I can replace them.

All four holes are countersunk which would suggest wood screws, but the step is designed to be removable for access to the battery well. Is it some kind of peg like the table leg uses?  Thanks in advance for info about the original design, or suggestions for easy alternatives.

#10 x 1.5" pan head stainless screws with finish washers. Mine are not countersunk.

I have a 1993 and they are countersunk.  Not sure what year Wes's boat is. And they could have been countersunk at a later date??

Thanks.  Appreciate the input I'll just run four screws through them.    I guess they didn't expect us to be working on our electrical system as often I do!

Mine had 4 wood screws with finish washers under the heads, but the holes were all boogered out from removing the step too many times so they would never tighten up.
I drilled the holes out larger and put in threaded inserts that take machine screws.   https://www.ezlok.com/threaded-inserts-for-wood (https://www.ezlok.com/threaded-inserts-for-wood)
The machine screws have the same size head and washers as the old wood screws.
