Title: Location of Midship clets

I have a CP 19/3 which I have been trailing.  This year I was able to get a slip in a marina. As a result, I needed to install mid ship cleats to assisting in docking.   I got two 5" deck horn cleats from Defender. 

I have read that the cleat should be installed at mid ship or slightly aft to to prevent the bow from hitting the dock.  I have further read that the mid point is 1/2 of the length of the water line (LWL).  The spec sheet for the  CP 19/3 states that the LWL is 16' 4".  When I measured from the stern forward at 8' 2", the mid point was close to the my visual mark.   However, when I measured the length of the water line (LWL) from the stern to the bow, it was 17'10".  The mid point from this measure was forward of what I thought the mid ship point based on visual look and the 8'2' measure from the stern. 

I also considered the placement of the cleat based on whether I would trip on it if were to would walk forward.  Based on all this figuring, I believe the ideal spot appears to be just aft of the aft port hole window. 

Before I start drilling holes, I would find it helpful, if anyone can provide some guidance on the proper placement/location for the mid ship cleats or a method to determine the mid ship point.

I have made a drill guide as well as aluminium backing places.  I have pulled back the head liner and I am read to install.

Bill,

I have a CP 19 mk2.  My solution is to use the jib fairlead and run spring line on inside of winch and cheat on jib sheet cleat. 

So far (2 years) this has worked well for me.

I am not expert, but this seems to manage the load, and saved me from drilling more holes in the boat.
