Title: Super Cool refrigration
Post by: SailingShadow on June 11, 2018, 07:21:04 PM
I have a supercool refrigeration installed. It is inoperative and seems not be made any more.Do any of you have information on this system or a good solution for refrigeration. I have not used built in ice box yet, it appears to be insulated, how well does it work.

I am thinking of getting a yeti style  cooler and putting it under the seat to keep ice. I really don't like hauling ice a lot every day.

I just use my ice box.  1 bag of 5 lb ice in 80 degree weather, and moderate beverage consumption, and I will still have some ice in bottom 2 days later.  Mine drains into bilge, next project is to connect to sink drain.

Thats petty good
I am in south Texas with 90+ temps and lots of sun.
If I could get 3 days out of 20 lbs of ice I would be happy.

Stephen - the icebox drain is below the waterline and significantly below the sink drain. I installed a Whale Gulper 220 pump as low on the engine compartment bulkhead as possible. This pump can be mounted upside down so the inlet is very close to the bottom of the hull and allows the icebox to drain to the pump by gravity (barely). The pump pumps the water back up above the waterline and out a new through-hull installed next to the one for the sink.

With the icebox drain so close to the waterline you want to be careful that seawater doesn't siphon back into the icebox. If you choose not to use a pump, I'd at least put a shutoff valve in the drain line and close it while sailing.
