Title: Cant access bearings in my Lewmar 7 single speed winch
Post by: chimerakc on April 24, 2018, 12:00:08 PM
Photo attached.  In the manual, when you remove the drum there are two sets of bearings right there that you just lift off.

In mine - see that grey cover?   And the bolts holding the whole thing down?   I looked all around the grey cover and found nothing that would release it.    Am I looking at removing those bolts to get to the bearings?   Maybe this 30 year old winch no longer has a manual.

Thanks

These small winches don't have bearings. You may be looking at a manual for a larger model. Just clean everything up (kerosene is the best solvent for this application), check that the pawls are in good condition and the springs are still springy (replace any questionable pawls or springs), put a drop of winch oil (NOT grease) on the pawls and a light coating of winch grease on the plastic drum, and you're good to go for a few more years.

So I found out that this old model has no bearings - just pawls.    Things that make you go "uh".    I will clean and lubricate those and not expect them to turn as easily as I hoped.
