Title: Rope clutch model recommendations please
Post by: H2operator on March 08, 2018, 09:14:01 AM
Rope clutch recommendations, I did a quick search and didn't come up with a brand/model. I'm retrofitting an older boat to cockpit lines.Any recommendations would be helpful. Of course Hutchins doesn't list the model that they use!
Thanks Lance

Most clutches are sized for a range of line sizes and you need to look at the halyards, topping lift, etc. determine what size range you need and then select from the various options available.  You probably need 1/4" to 1/2". Since you are not trying to match existing mounting holes you are free to go with any of them.  Garhauer Marine is usually a price leader, Spinlok is fairly good in small size,  I think mine are Ronstan, the lever type not the new constrictor type.

Thanks for the reply, the clutches are just part of the new system of course. I'll be installing a deck plate under the hinge bracket. Is your setup from the factory?

I like the clutches from Lewmar because they provide smooth easy release and don't abuse your rope. they are however a higher profile than most others. I found the original clutches on my boat to be marginal in size but work OK, but we are not talking big loads for a CP23 main sail.

Yes they are, but keep in mind Hutchin's changes what they use periodically, probably for bulk pricing advantage.  Everything on my boat is Ronstan, however, others have Lewmar exclusively.

I modified Mudlark, my '87 MK 2, last year and bought my deck organizer, rope clutches, blocks and winch from Hutchins. Prices were competitive and I like supporting them if I can. The install went well. I use butyl tape for bedding and didn't have any leaks. I also drilled oversize holes, filled with epoxy and drilled the proper size. This was really only necessary for the holes next to the mast hinge as the deck in this area has a piece of plywood sandwiched between the fiberglass for reinforcement. All the other deck areas were solid glass.  I looked at posted pictures to guesstimate positions and alignments.

I may switch out the blocks and go to a deck plate so I'm interested in the plate you wind up choosing to fit under the hinge support.

Also, I found that the screws that accompany the hardware were either too long or two short so be prepared to buy different ones once you've drilled your holes and dry fitted the set up.

Good luck!

Thanks Paul, I'll either use a plate that I found online or fabricate my own . I'll try to find a photo of the plate I like, it has a ring welded on for a pole mast raising system. Do you know if a resource for the deck organizer placement? My 81's coach is in my opinion under-built so I'll be placing additional glass and backing plates. Like you said, the loads are pretty low but the layup in my coach is ridiculously lightweight and I tend to be hard on equipment.

Lance, try Hutchins for a digital of the setup. I believe they included on with my order. Sorry I didn't keep it.

You may also want to google Com-Pac 23 sailboats and scroll thru the images. I'd post a shot of my set up but Mudlark is still wearing her winter coat/wrap.

Mine came with a Spinlock Jammer. When it wore out I just replaced it with the same one because I am too scared (and incompetent) to drill new holes. Here is a link:

Hope this is helpful
