I am thinking about installing a Jiffy Jax (aka Lazy Jacks) sail flaking kit? Advice?
Not to dissuade you and if you move forward I would sure like to hear how it works out, but is manually flaking a problem for you now, or at least a problem that needs some money thrown at it and a bunch of extra lines and fittings on the boom/mast? I have five 3/4" web straps with plastic side release clips that I made up each a different color to reflect its specific length and position on the boom. I turn the boat over to the tiller pilot or passenger/crew member, drop the main, clip the boom to the backstay, tension the sheet, then it is pull the leech/flake/snap five times. Whole process takes about two minutes and is relatively easy. Another minute or so to put the cover on.
On a Beneteau 343 I used to crew on the owner had a mack pack and because we raced short handed mostly and it was a bigger boat, I did like that system to handle the main. But on my 23 it seems like a baby job compared to that 343.
The improvement I could make to my system is figuring out a way to keep the straps on the boom, but I haven't determined how to do that in an unobtrusive manner. Now, I line them up on my belt/pants waist in the order I need to grab them, short to long. Works fine.
