Happy holidays everyone,
I finally had a few days to put together all of my pictures documenting my CP16 project.
I have quietly been reading this forum for years and I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has shared their knowledge and expertise on the site.
This project was a ton of fun and a great learning experience. I recently had a baby, moved out of NYC (I have been sailing and storing my boats on Long Island for years), and bought a house... guess what's next? Yeap, selling a few boats.
It's a bummer, but I going to move onto a house project that might take the cake for the biggest project I have ever jumped into. I'll gladly listen to anyone's advice on that topic too ;)
Enjoy the video and my apologies for having no filmmaking skills.
Seasons Greetings'

Tim,
Wow, you are way more stubborn than I am. I would have given up, err
Better said, I would not have even tried.
Congrats on the baby and the house
Beautiful restoration, Tim. If you need another boat project I can send my 23 up to you. It's no problem...Thanks!!
Great video - thanks for posting it!
Tim,
Great project - what a transformation! Video was very enjoyable on this rainy day out here on Long Island.
Congrats and Good luck with the baby!
Merry Christmas!
Tim,
Great video and incredible work. I would have quit the minute I opened her up. Congrats on the new edition and best of luck! Merry Christmas!
Tim!
Great name by the way, Excellent restoration. I know you will enjoy both the boat and the Baby Burrito.
Merry Christmas!
Tim Gardner
Hey Tim: Super Job, thanks for posting. Congratulations on your restoration and have a very Merry Christmas with you growing family.
Smooth Sailing
regards charlie
Thanks for all the supportive words everyone and Merry Christmas Eve!
I'm going to put Kpeting up on Craigslist right after the holiday. Does anyone want to chime in a price they think would be fair?
I am thinking around 4k...Neptune knows that between the Epifanes paint, the KiwiGrip, Interlux primer and paint, the West Systems epoxy, the rebuilt trailer, the G10, all the New England Ropes Sta-Set, and the 3 new sails I may be taking a loss, BUT I am just more interested in someone giving her a good home.
Tim
Tim,
I think you have a good handle on the market with a target of $4k. For a Craiglist offer, I would even suggest $4,500. And expect some negotiation.
I have seen selling price rise in 2017 on CP 16, in good shape, and yours certainly qualifies as "fully restored".
There is also a Sailboat Listing that has a more national view, and may help. I think it is free.
Best of luck,
Brian
I think that's more than fair. By the way, your rudder project resembled mine closely...only difference is that I sheathed mine in 3mm okueme plywood and put a hardwood leading edge on. The boat looks great!!
Tim, i can not even begin to suggest what is the best path to take, but i can say with assurance that what seemed to be the logical thing to do and sell our first 16 decades ago when we started careers, family, and bought a small farm, was in retrospect a mistake. We missed the opportunity to take our son sailing while he was a young child and have it be part of his life.
It also tugged at me for well over 25 years and now we are playing catch up, and doing a pretty good job of it! I won't miss the opportunity with my grandson. :)
Merry Christmas.
Wealth of wisdom is Mas' words ...
Tim, where on Long Island are you buying your new home?
Mas, very wise words. I'm just juggling a few too many projects right now and I would hate to see Kpeting sitting neglected on the hard. I'm a firm believer in the rolling stones not gathering moss theory. (This is also why I'm more concerned about getting the boat into someone's hands that is going to use it rather than the price I'll fetch for her.) Plus when my daughter is old enough to sail she'll also be big enough for a sailboat project, right? ;)
And what better way to cultivate ownership over this hobby than building your own boat...plus I still own two fishing boats and will "torture" her the same way my father did to me and keep her out to sea against her will. Haha.
Oh yeah, suffering through a hobby is the second best way to create ownership.
TG, I've moved out of NY altogether and up to western MA where my family still is. This kid needed some grandparents and cousins. I will miss LI though and especially Glen Cove where I kept my boats. Luckily I can still hit saltwater in less than an hour and half.
Merry Christmas everyone,
Tim
Tim,
Merry Christmas , congratulation and best of luck in your new home! Your video was an inspiration for this old Compac 16 owner ( old owner, old boat).
As for the house, my advice is plan, plan some more, double check your plans then go at it. You obviously have the skills you need and if I can judge by your yacht restoration your home will come out to be a great place to raise a family and store your future Compacs.
All my best for a great New Year!
What an inspiration. From what looked like a chainsaw job to a "new" boat. Thanks for posting the video.
Don,
Thanks for the advice! Planning and re-planning is keeping me awake at night...I love it. The house is a cool bungalow from 1900. She's got great bones (unlike all the boat projects I have ever done) and craftsmen detailing that you hardily see anymore... and will never see in my price range ;)
I'm really excited to get in there and start working. Also, thanks for the vote of confidence. Luckily my father is a retired carpenter and a true Yankee engineer, so I am happy to have him by my side and excited to join forces in our, most likely, last big project we'll pull off together.
As for the future boat projects: haha they are going to have to wait...according to my wife. But when I'm not thinking about this house I'm trying to imagine what my first boat project should be with my daughter. Or I should say second; "we" built a skiff together for her 2 month birthday.
BUT, when I do need an immediate boat project fix I walk down the street and give these guys a hand:

It's a kid that I went to high school with who is really going for it.
Gerry, thanks. I'm glad people have been enjoying the movie. I am only sorry that the quality is sub par. I'll do a better job next time.
Tim
Wow! Incredibly inspiring. Thank you for sharing the fruits of your hard labor. That's a perfect boat for a small family.
Tim, I missed this first time through, but what a fabulous restoration and no apologies necessary for the video, very complete, descriptive and enjoyable.
In your case I think the video will sell the boat. When folks buy an older boat they are always looking for and wary of the "hidden flaws". In the case of your 16 there is nothing hidden, you exposed everything and have evidence of addressing all potential issues. All the best to you with your "new" project certainly one worthy of priority status.
Hey tim, great video I've watched a few times now. What kind of anchor bracket/roller setup do you have on your 16? Any pointers for installation or after thoughts on the setup after using it?

I second the question! I've been trying to figure out a good bow anchor set up for my 16, also. Photos and/description would be appreciated! Thanks for the great viddy- truly fun to watch.
PF and Yamaha, the bow roller is made by Garhauer. I think it is this one: https://www.garhauerstore.com/deck-blocks-hardware/bow-rollers/bow-roller-ar-30.html
I'll try and get some pictures up asap. They are on my old phone.
I made oversized G-10 backing plates for the roller and the hardware that I attached a (relatively) heavy turnbuckle to use as a bobstay.
The setup works great. Getting that foresail out over the bow has made a huge difference her sailing quality.
Thanks!
