Ladies and gents!! It's gonna be that time again soon so let's get the ball rollin', shall we? I'm proposing a mid January gathering somewhere central to all of us- but within 5 minutes crawling time from my casa!! Maybe somewhere near the NJ shore this time?!
Let's hear your ideas, mates!! Looking forward to seeing both the veterans and newbees!!
Well this sounds like a great idea! Since we are also looking at dates for CBMWG maybe we should consider the two holiday weekends for both so folks have an extra day to travel. That would be 1/13 and 2/17. Wuddaya think?
LOL...All this talk of three day weekends, the only 3 day weekends for a construction worker on LBI is Memorial Day and Labor Day. These others you speak of I do not know. :/
Time to invent another one!
It's not about inventing one, it's about getting to take it. :/
Though I'm not an oyster fan, I was told the oyster bar in Manahawkin had stepped up it's game with a large variety of local bays. Can you row home from there??!!

http://www.wharfsidenj.com/
Great Kevin. That's pretty close to me. I like it.
Reign: Yes, the Old Causeway Inn has an incredible selection of fresh oysters...but if I went there too often I'd need to sell my boat to pay for 'em!! Nah, I can't row home from anywhere. I live 9 miles inland 80 feet above sea level!
Kev: Is this the place where we had that waitress named Legs?
No...this one is up in point pleasant.
Here's another in Lavallette...BYOB
Channel Marker Cafe (http://www.channelmarkercafe.com/)
I know right where the Wharfside is. Close enough for me to drive up and scope out in person.
Now, we need a headcount of sorts.
Looks like the place in Lavallette closes after the Holidays. The Wharfside is great and water front location.
Jack Bakers Wharfside Point Pleasant Beach NJ (https://youtu.be/3mJU-V5V2Is)
That location looks good. As usual we will plan a weekend getaway around the gathering. If the weather allows we could do some exploring on LBI and Suzie could actually see Barnegat Bay, the ocean, Tice's and local attractions. Sounds good.
Do we have any dates in mind yet?
-Allen
This is all sounding great! I'd like to propose Saturday January 20th. Any thoughts, mates??
I'll do a maybe to that.
Carve the date in butter, and Beck and I will try to be there, now that we have power AND sail vessels......ie: transvesselites!!
Great! Larry's in!!
That works for us.
Shaping up nicely! Nice to see that Pedro has come out of the boat house!
So far that date looks good!
Sounding like the date that works for most, it unfortunately for us, conflicts with a two day music event that we have already committed to. :(
Oh well there is always next year......and hopefully will get to see some of you at CBMWG.
Point Pleasant NJ is almost my backyard, and I used to rent canoes and kayaks (Mohawk Canoe & Kayak Livery, Farmingdale NJ) well up Manasquan river back in the day...
Me and the missus Admiral are a definate, probable maybe.
Rick, sorry you and Susan can't make it but we're planning to be at the CBMWG....so see you then. Too bad, I was gonna buy you first round at our MWG!
Brian, sure hope you can make it. I forgot how close it is to you!
Now...about Marty Kern. C'mon man, you can make the drive!!
Trying to reel this in now. Date: Saturday, January 20th in the year of our Lord 2018. Time: I dunno- 6pm work for everyone? What say ye? Place: Jack Bakers Wharfside in Point Pleasant as suggested by Commodore Kev! Now for the headcount:
The Admiral and I.
Commodore Kev and first mate Lesa
Pedro and Becky- hope you can be there.
Mr shiny anchor himself- Allen and Suzie
Brian and Ellen
Marty and Barbara- I still need to call him!
Larry and Lexi
I'm sure that I am forgetting someone so weigh in, will ya??
I maybe in mental preparation for the NY Jet AFC Champion game on Jan 21, but I think I can squeeze it in.
Okay, I've plugged the date into my phone/calendar/camera/computer... and on and on. Barbara and I will be there so long as the good Doctor doesn't schedule drilling into my other leg just before then. On that note, the first operation went quite well and I was walking the next day (with no pain!). But, can't drive for at least 10 days after the surgery. Sooo, I'm hoping to schedule for after the 20th!
Regards to all,
Marty K.
Marty, this is good news! Just tell the doc you're tied up on the 20th! Looking forward to seeing you and Barbara!!
Update: In my travels, I happened upon the Wharfside Restaurant in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ,...yea, the very one recommended by none other than our own Commodore Kevin! (More on this at the gathering) I think it's a great place for our event, on the Manasquan just inside the inlet, not very far, good food, great service. So as the self appointed Grand Poobah of the Mid Winter Gathering, I hereby proclaim that this is the place!
There's a good chance a special guest will be joining us...more later. Stay well my friends!
Thanks for checking that out, Bob.
And what is with the teasers? I hate when they do that on the news. "And coming up next, wait and see who did what with whom at what location in the dark of the night........"
-Guess Who
Guess you'll just have to see on 1/20/18! Can't wait! It is truly my privilege to organize this stellar event.
What! You mean I can't almost walk to the restaurant. So much for tradition!
Marty K.
If you leave now, you can walk. Really, how far can it be???
The misses Admiral Ellen is being deployed to St Croix after the new year. I may be sailing solo.
That's fine. Although we'd want the two of you there, we'll settle for just you! If you behave!! Now to discuss the time. I'd originally suggesting 6pm but this is not set in concrete. Anyone want earlier like 5pm or in our language 1700 hours local?
Both are good for us, Bob.
Looks like boss put me on Filght to Paris at 6ish on Jan 20th. Will see if I can change.

Lemme see... 51.6 miles. Should only take about 17 hours and 1 minute (when I was 18!). Or I could save an hour via I-195 if I don't get run over. Hey, it is the skinniest part of NJ.
Marty K.
Trust me...it'll be worth the walk!!
Good morning Bob, Marty, Allen, and the rest of the crew.. sitting here in sub zero temps in Maine.. thought I would check in to see what was new on the site. I'm afraid that we will miss yet another mid winter gathering - just a bit too far to travel. We are in Maine full time now, and loving life, meeting new friends but missing old ones like you guys! If I am lucky, I will get to bring the boat up here this coming season - it sure would look good on a mooring in Robinhood cove! Best wishes for the new year - if anyone has the opportunity to come visit in Georgetown ( near Bath ) feel free to get in touch! Have a wonderful time at the gathering.. jt
JT...so nice to hear from you! I figured Maine was treating you well. We sure miss you and would love to travel up there but life seems to be getting in the way of- Life!! Although we haven't seen you and Janet in quite a while, we still love your friendship and look forward to the next time, however far into the future it may be, we can share a meal, some drinks and lots of laughs!!
Although we'll miss you at the Mid Winter, in one sense you will be quite present. Janet has emailed you credit card info so a big thank you is in order! But being the gracious guy that I am, I will split the tip with you!!!
Hope Christmas and 2017 were good for you and accept my best wishes for a happy and contented 2018!!!
Bob23 in snowy NJ!
bob, saw some of the videos you guys made. one suggestion, its a sailboat -----raise sail----hahahah
Oh is that what that big stick is for?? Thanks!!! Thought it was a flagpole! What vid are you talking about? Kev is the videographer of the crew around here.
Attenzione compagni: As the self appointed czar and founder of the MWG, I am hereby exercising my right to make additions and/or changes as the whims of my somewhat unstable mind dictate!! Can we change the time for the MWG which is to be held on January 20th in the year of our Lord two thousand and eighteen from 1800 hours local time to 1700 hours local? Please?? Pretty please?? With rum on top???? I think this will work out better for everyone and it will enable a distinguished guest from afar and his lovely bride to participate. Whatcha all think??
oh yes.. Janet can be rather gracious! Enjoy the gathering.. and keep warm! it was -10 when I got up this morning.. the heating system in our cottage is not designed for this.. thank goodness we also have a wood stove :)
She's a peach! 4f here now...oh wait: Up to a searing 5!! Thanks JT and a very happy new year to you and Janet!!
bob, just kidding you know. take good care this winter. look forward to seeing your new trailer sailer in june. I'm thinking race wager.
Bob,
5:00 will be fine with us as our hotel is very close. Guest..? Bride??? Ahha, clues to the mystery.
Good to hear from you Jason! Our best to you and Janet. We will keep your invite in mind...when it is warmer though.
Allen
Great to "hear" from you JT. -10 eh, sounds pretty cold. Even here in suburban Philly it got real chilly. When I left my S-I-L and B-I-L around 1am it was 7 degrees and I thought that was cold. When Princess Goldie wanted out about 5:30am it was FOUR degrees! Thank goodness for the good old pellet stove. And the heat pump actually worked down to 6 degrees without the "emergency" heat coming on.
Marty K.
Attenzione amici! Due to the nearly unanimous vote, the time of the infamous 2018 Mid Winter Gathering has been changed to 1700 hours local with the venue being the Wharfside in Point Pleasant Beach. I will personally visit the joint to pick out a table near the water...and away from most of the other patrons so as to lesson the possibility of us all getting arrested. Some of us tend to get a bit...ahem...loud!! Oh yeah, the date remains the same: 1/20/2018.

See ya there!!!
My sincere apologies, but I am being shipped To France that night for work.
I promise to raise a rum grog at Newark airport for the festivities. I work in Normandy, small little port infested with sailboats, and no ice, but cold North Sea water.
Ellen is due to ship out to St Croix for her next FEMA deployment that monday.
I will do best to make it for the Virginia gathering in Feb. tough winter
Hey Brian, sounds like a winter of being pulled many directions for your family. We will be at a music event at the same time so let's raise a glass together at 1700 in support of our fellow Compacteers. Hope you will be able to find your way down to Virginia for the February event. Right now there is no sailing happening down here, as the marinas are all frozen up! Not normal Virginia. :)
Brian that is the lamest excuse I've ever heard of! But we're a forgiving bunch here and promise not to roast you too much at the CBMWG!
Here is the latest headcount, as I understand it:
Me and the Admiral ('bout time she showed up for something)
Commodore Kevin and Lesa aka Mrs. Rollin' Bowline.
Marty and Barbara. Marty has recently started a rigging business.
?? and ?? from ??
?? from NJ
Allen and Suzie. Please everyone bring your sunglasses just in case Allen totes his anchor along with him.
Larry and Lexi. Are you there, L&L? Hope you can make it!
On top of this cast of thousands, there's a good chance that there could be a surprise at this years MWG the likes of which the world has never seen before, nor will ever see again!
On a misc note: Please remember that this MWG, the NJ one, is the original and best MWG in existence anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Often imitated, never duplicated!!
1/20/2018 1700 hours local at the Wharfside in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ.
https://www.bing.com/search?q=wharfside+point+pleasant+nj&src=IE-SearchBox&FORM=IESR4A&pc=EUPP_UE04
L & L will be split into just 1 L.
Lexi will be with girls at a dance competition, but I'll be there.
I technically that makes it roughly 32.6% of L&L there since Lexi would be the 'better half'.
Larry.
Suzie and I will be coming in on Friday. We will see you all on Saturday.
I'm likely a no. Wife has a planned event so I'll have to raise a glass while watching Moana with the baby.
Well, your certainly invited and hey, bring Moana and the baby along!!
Mas,
That drink will be hoisted at 17hr.
Reighman ,
At some point we should discuss our Siren 17 adventures. That boat was kinda the alternate universe ComPac. She loved having rail buried and was never
Completely
Upright.
It was a blast to sail in heavy weather, but without the safe
Compac tolerance.
The moment I step on it (in water) I knew it wasn't the boat for us. I have to make it to the BBB this season.
Sorry,
The second L will need to bow out.
My mom just died.
Larry.
Oh Larry we're so sorry to hear this. All our thoughts and prayers are for you and your family at this time. At the gathering, we'll take a moment of silence for her and for you. Again, our sincere condolences.
So sorry for your loss Larry.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Larry
Very sorry to learn of your loss, Larry. A mother is not replaceable.
Marty Kern
A slight potential bump in the road. Wharfside "doesn't really take reservations" or so saith our friendly host but we should have no problem getting all of us seated. About 95% chance in his words. I'll take those odds but as a contingency plan, we could walk next door to the Lobster Shanty where they open at 5pm, same time as our non-reservations are made for. Looking forward to seeing everyone!
For the cause...'cause I can
Thanks Bob. The weather is looking great for the weekend!
Ciao amici! Hope you all are well. I have taken the liberty of making reservations at Jack Bakers Lobster Shanty as a backup precaution just in case the Wharfside doesn't live up to their 95% promise. I plan to arrive at the Wharfside a bit early to secure a berth and then I'll cancel Lobster Shanty. So unless you hear from me on Saturday, we'll still meet at the Wharfside for more fun and games! Looking forward to seeing everyone but we'll miss those who won't be attending.
1700 hours local time. 1/20/18 See ya all there!!
I wish I could come . . . 65 years ago, I used to crab and fish along the Manasquan Inlet opposite what is now Warfside. Back then I dreamed of sailing one of those boats heading South for the Winter. Now its Winter and I am South.
My great granddad and granddad's generation owned 14 miles of the Jersey coast from the high tide line to the RR tracks. The Woolley Fishery had fish camps up and down the shore using Pond Fishing Techniques. The fishermen would row out to the pound, a circle of saplings with a net and a weir facing the tide, and scoop out the fish. They would row back through the serf and pull the boats up with a horse, using logs as rollers. In the Winter, the guys would cut ice from nearby lakes, store the ice I pits under straw, and pack fish for Fulton's Market up the track in New York City during the Summer. My granddad was one of the first to install a car engine in a boat to use inlets instead of pulling the fishing boats up through the serf. During the great depression my family decided to continue supporting the families that worked for the company by selling off the land. The Woolley Fishery eventually sold out the Crutchfield.
Just seeing this now for some reason Dave and that is fascinating! Wish you could have been there.
It's been a week now since the historic MWG of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts took place and good news! We all met bail, convinced the judge we were not a flight risk and as a thank you, sat in his chambers drinking PBR! I love the NJ court system!!
We all had a great time and a big thank you for all who made this years MWG a smashing success! We drank, we ate, we laughed and lied! We attempted to have a moment of silence for Larry's mom and Brad Cutter but a couple of female gabbalots who will remain anonymous kind of thwarted our plans. Still in our hearts we did offer remembrance.
Near the conclusion of the fest when desert and coffee were being served (or in mine and Becky's case- an espresso martini) Kev set up his laptop and we enjoyed a wonderfully put together video of the last 2 Barnegat Bay Bash's! Thank you Commodore K for taking that lead and I for one hope you will make that an ongoing tradition.
Now it's time to start planning the 2018 BBB!! Stay tuned, me hearties!! There may be a surprise or should I say surprises!! Bwooohahahahaha!!!
If there are not pictures it didn't happen!
There are mugshots. Trying to protect the guilty here!
Most enjoyable get-together at Jack's Wharfside. Should really do it more often. Fortunately, for me, I had shanghaied my son, David, into attending this event. That meant that I didn't have to walk 17 hours to get there since I got to enjoy a ride in his (wife's?) hot, little Roush Mustang!
It was nice seeing everyone again, great company, and I look forward to our next gathering. Bob has been hinting at a double BBB this year. Works for me! Maybe this time I'll actually get to Tice's (got a nice new thirty dollar snap shackle for the forestay). I can't understand why the "old" shiny shackle that I found at a flea market for a buck "snapped"?
And ditto on Kev's video presentation. Brought back some fond? memories shared by all. Missed those that couldn't make it this time. Hopefully, we'll all get together this Spring, early Summer. Sorry that Larry wasn't able to attend with his family. His Eclipse was thrilling to watch surfing the bay at BBB-2016 when I was too chicken to hit the bay with Pegasus. Also missed was Lily and Brad (Brad passed a couple of years ago), true trailer sailors who knew how to really live aboard a ComPac 19.
See ya on the bay...
Marty K.
Thanks to all for another prestigious gala and meeting of the East Coast Compac-o-nauts. Suzie and I came down a day early and were able to do some sight seeing on LBI.
Of course I had to show here the infamous location of the BBB anchorage, Tice's Shoal. The first pic is from the Observation Deck/Dock and than of course, a view from the ocean side.
A grand evening it was at a wonderful venue! The final picture shows some of the crew stumbling out into the parking lot trying to locate their rides.
I think it was Marty's camera that got the official group shot. Hopefully he can get it posted onto the site.
I sent some videos and pictures to Kevin of the 2017 BBB sail so he can add them to his great video. Yes, we actually did sail that weekend!
See you all soon,
Allen and Suzie
