Title: CP 16 on Craigslist in NJ
Post by: Reighnman on October 17, 2017, 11:21:32 AM
Came across it last night. For $150 it must be rough shape but if you live in the area it might be a deal. My wife would sell me if I brought another boat into the yard for winter storage. I promise her no and then sent an email with no response yet:)

From the seller: "Couple of things about the boat. I can't seem to locate the paperwork. The boat is in the water right now and needs to be taken out by the purchaser. The main sail has a tear but is repairable. The jib is in good condition. The tiller has been weathered and bashed so it will need to be replaced or repaired (has to be sanded and glued. Possibly just bound and taped. ) The hull is in decent shape and the drainage system in the boat is clogged just plastic pipes so running high pressure hose to rinse out. The cabin is filled with water due to leaving the hatch open during the rains.

The boat has a blue motor mount. One of the tie downs has been ripped out. Bolts broke so needs to be replaced. The rigging is quite old now but will work for a while longer. This is why the price is $150 or best offer."

I sent an email concerning paperwork.
In NJ the boat is useless without the title. :(

Here's a link to the process for replacing a lost title. Doesn't seem that hard for the current owner.

I can provide Bauer 12 and extra Torqeedo 1003, to help with tow...

Looks like excuses are running out to save this poor cp 16....

It looks like you NJ guys have this under control. However, K3v1n, if you mostly want to save the boat from certain doom but don't so much want another boat, I'm interested as well. However, I'm in VA so logistics are a bit more complicated. Trailer certainly would need to be road worthy. And like NJ, title for trailer and boat are essential.

any idea how long it's been full of water? I'm concerned about a hard freeze and damage to the ballast/keel.

Haven't heard peep back from the guy. :/

Also Lesa said if he can produce a title she'll give me the cash!

@ Brian. It said the boat has a motor mount, perhaps we could just mount the Torqeedo on it?

PS. This would make a great video adventure! lol

Kevin- it looked like motor mount not really mounted, but if secure, would We can strap a Torqeedo on it (with a line and float attached....just in case. Motor is waterproof,, kinda...)

definitly video worthy quest...I

While it takes a little time,  in Virginia, one can get a title by sending a certified letter to the last person who actually held title to the craft.  If that person doesn't respond, or the letter is undeliverable at the address of record on the registration, then one forks over a few clams and a new title is issued to persons who stored the abandoned vessel.

If that information isn't available, call Gerry at Com Pac with the vessel numbers and he will tell you to whom the boat was first sold. Then you make phone calls to said person.

Hmmm, maybe I confused tie downs as being connected to motor mount.

Any, still would not be too trustful based on rest of boat condition.

And think of the camera angles if we bring other boat..

I tried once to title a title-less boat in NJ with no sucess.  It was my brother's sunfish, and since no engine, I ignored the part about it being over 12 ft.  On manasquan reservoir I used the loop hole the it was a " club racer".

I have learned to go several times as different NJ DMV staff make different decisions, based on mood-family connections-or greasing the palms (this is NJ).  I got lucky once with a PA registered trailer with no title.  I had to notorize bill of sale.  3rd visit to DMF, and friends wife at window, finally got it done.

Well it looks like $150 is the tuition for title lessons, fiberglass repair lessons, sail repairing/making session, woodwork lessons, trailer repair lessons, water and mildew remediation lessons, etc............  You guys are better men for such. I would have never assumed I could attempt such work on a craft in such condition and end up with less in it than  http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/68192   That is also considering i don't place any value on my time involved.

Jus saying.....in case this ends up being a 16 foot fiberglass hole in the water into which you pour much time and money! On the other hand it is great that a neglected 16 might breathe new life. Any way someone is close enough to actually go visit this little boat? Sure would answer a ton of questions. NJ ain't that large! Good excuse for a road trip Kev and Bob.

Kevin,

Ellen (my admiral) graciously offered to help the restoration, by sharing bottle of wine with Admiral Lesa, while work is being done on boat.  She sees this as mutual stress releif mitigation.

I have none of the required skills, but am good at holding stuff, opening stuff, and driving to emergency room...and willing to help while Galway Terrapin is in winter lay up.

Also, next weekend is good for me for a road trip.  Would recommend "loading up" stuff/tools so, if it still is viable, we make 1 trip...

It will only get colder...

Agreed! Unless major hull issues compliments of water and cold, nothing mentioned can't be dealt with and a nice video is clearly in the cards. Meanwhile the price of those little boats has been on the creep up since we went shopping for one a year and one half ago. Not entirely sure why except harder to find them in good shape given their age.

Meanwhile Imma seeing a CP16 regatta beginning to take shape.  :)

Okay heard back from the seller, he has found the paper work! Now to find time to go up there. I already have plans for next Saturday. :/ Sounds like the boat is at the dock in his yard and has to be taken to a ramp....somewhere, yet to be decided.

Bob/Brian what say you?

Kevin,

I am in for next weekend (nov4-5)   Taking my 19 out of water oct 28/29.

Can bring Bauer 12 with Torqeedo, and Torqeedo #2 off of 19 for the 16. If you prefer using your tekacat, its up to you.  I think the Bauer will be drier, and has more capacity (she will seat 4).   I can tow with my Subaru. A couple of Hand pumps, and I have I submerable battery one that works well.  I have some white water canoe float bags that may help, if she is leaking...

Any idea what shape the trailer is in?  I have magnetic mounted trailer lights, and spare tires that may fit.

Post by: K3v1n on October 23, 2017, 03:46:51 PM
Thanks Brian!
If we just put a Torqeedo on the CP16 that should work fine and no need for a tow boat, I would hope. I thinking of going up on Sunday to put eyes on this boat and trailer and scout out the nearest ramp. I'd hate for us all to go up and it doesn't happen. Maybe there is someone up there that will offer a tow, ya never know.

I'll keep you posted.
Thx,
Kevin

So if this happens you will have 42 feet of boat! Pretty respectable eh!? I remind all the high rollers at our marina that we have 48 feet worth of boat. We're moving on up Kev! Now.......let's see.....31-26.....you only need to come up with 5 more feet to have a 31.   :)

Good luck and here's hoping that she is in condition to restore. Say hey to everyone up there.

Ok..I'm in on this deal. Are we talking partial ownership? This way, we can spread the blame around!
Title: Re: CP 16 on Craigslist in NJ
Post by: Mas on October 23, 2017, 07:01:40 PM
Well then we can only give you 8 feet each worth of TLC (Total Length Credit). So....let's see...that would be 34 total for Kev and 31 for you Bob. That also means Bob23 would need to be changed to Bob31. I dunno, this is getting confusing...then there is the fee....:)

Kevin, I will follow your lead on the tow boat, but do keep in mind the camera angles.  I think America's Funniest home videos still pays, and you, Bob, and sad CP 16 should be good family viewing (errr...may need to mute sound)

Good plan to scout first.

Thanks for the offers of help but I'm going to have to pull the plug on this venture. The more I look at the logistics the more I get stressed. It's sounds like a good deal but too invest the time right now is not practicable....and as they say; there's always another boat.

Hey Kevin,
Have you spoken with the seller at all? If you are out, I'll try to call him today. I could head up that way this weekend, but I need to know that the trailer is solid enough to make the trip to VA, and if it isn't road ready what does it need.

Keith

I have no information on the trailer. The tricky part is the boat is still in the water and has to be removed by the purchaser. That means finding the nearest ramp and a way to get the boat there. No motor and only jib sail. So I'm out.

There are plenty of marinas on the lake:
http://lakehopatcong.com/lake-hopatcong-marinas.html

and I'm sure Bob would like to work on his rowing, just don't call it a paddle ;)

As for the trailer, one could always bring one to ensure road-worthiness.

Kev, you're out? I didn't even know you were at bat!!

The older i am the more that not carrying projects on my shoulders or brain is the least expensive way to go for many reasons. Measuring by dollars is not always the best approach, clearly necessary but it not always yields the best result.

I tried reaching out to the seller last week, was willing to go try to rescue it Sunday, but couldn't get any two way communication going with him. He sent me a note that the mast had fallen in the water and was 20 feet down.. not sure if it had been rigged at the time or not.. communications only led me to more questions with no answers.   If she isn't sunk yet, I expect it's one hard freeze away.

I've already got my one resurrected CP-16 "Foundling (http://cpyoa.geekworkshosting.com/forum/index.php?topic=9865.msg76339#msg76339)" under my belt, but as I'm sensing some sort of "Virginian Contingent" of fellow Commonwealth dwellers that may form up for some sort of rescue mission north, I'm becoming more and more interested in that wee Jersey Girl's fate.  Don't want her myself, don't need her, got mine...Just interested and willing to help, if I can.

Most of all, I'd like to see some pix of her, but it sounds like either the owner's a flake, is too busy to work with those reaching out to him, or simply doesn't particularly care.  If he's got a lakefront home on Lake Hopalong-Cassidy, or wherever, then my hunch is that the fate of some $150 obo micro-hulk that's sort of besmirching his dock might be about equal to my level of concern over those crumbs in the toaster. I mean, I know I really oughtta clean them out, but then again they don't exactly keep me up at night. Small potatoes.

But yeah, if it comes down to some grand expedition north from hereabouts, I've got a bullet-proof Mercury 2½ horsepower motor that'll handily push that gal to the ramp.  I've also still got that nice perky 12V bilge pump with the LONG hose that I used to pump out my own gal's belly, along with a bunch of other needful crap for the circumstances to lend if it comes down to it...as long as I get it all back without fail and without damage.

So....water in cabin cuz hatch left open, trailer not road worthy, suspect motor mount, jib only and suspect, running rigging also suspect, mast missing and 20 feet down which means standing rigging is shot, tiller delaminated, given age gel coat is suspect, my guess interior is molded, cushions now throw away, no motor, ......you wanna keep going? You are a better man than me, I wouldn't get it even if he paid me to fetch it unless i just wanted to tackle such a project which mostly is a bunch of fiberglass shaped like a boat. I'd rather sail!

Then again.....it would be nice to see a 16 resurrected. :)

Bob, drink two PBR's and sleep on it!
